To become a Dental Hygienist you must first get your Dental Hygienist college degree. Dental Hygienist schools offer a certificate, a bachelor and even a Masters degree, in a 4 year or a 6 year long program.
Dental Hygienist school Programs will require at least a high school diploma and a high score on the college exam entrance tests. Some schools will require the prior completion of a science bachelor, but this will lead to a 2 years long program only. Dental Hygienist school classes will include anatomy, chemistry, pharmacology, nutrition, physiology, periodontology, microbiology, clinical dental hygiene, sociology among other classes, as well as laboratory and clinical training.
Hello, I would like some advice please from those who are studying or finished studying Dental hygienist. I am looking into schools in Toronto and I was seriously considering Toronto College of Dental Hygiene. However, it is an 18 months program which comesx out to I guess 2 years of 9 months each but the total cost including Tuition, textbooks, insurance etc is too high for my budget, they say around 19,000 $ first year and 16,000$ second year! I am wondering if all schools are the same. I heard that the province of Quebec is cheaper. Has anybody gone Dental Hygienist school in Montreal? I don’t mind moving if it is worth it. Please Advice.

I went to George Brown College in Toronto City actually, it was not as high but than again it was a few years back. However, I doi know that if you are applying for a Dental hygienist private school you will pay a lot more and not necessary better education. Actually the best place to study Dental Hygiene is Community College. always check that the school is accredited tough because it will allow you to take National Dental Hygiene Certification Board Exam with the NDHCB. Good Luck

I am dental hygiene instructor and I can assure you that community colleges in Canada offer very good education when it comes to training future Dental hygienists. Private Dental Hygienist schools can cost as high as 30 to 60K so you should be aware of all the facts before you spend your money.

I am really interested in applying for Dental Hygienist in school; however I really don’t know what is the best school to go to. I live in Vancouver BC. Some of my friends are going through schooling for it right now, but I’ve heard mixed things about small community colleges- not being placed in a work area after completing schooling.
Any advice?
Chantelle.

Hi,
I am about to start my 3rd year at York University in Toronto for a BBA degree. I am highly considering changing my career path to a dental hygienist. Does anyone know what I have to do. Like what are the requirements to get into a dental hygienist program. Do you need a bachelor first. Also, does anyone know the best school in Toronto or ontario to obtain the dental hygienist certificate or diploma.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Lala – You do not need a university degree to be a dental hygienist. Let me offer a suggestion, you have read that the employment outlook is poor for this profession and you
have a university degree, why do you not go back and become a dentist? That would be the most practical thing. In my experience the hygiene college that I went to discovered that I had a university degree and women (instructors) became vultures. They were hell bent on seeing me fail and kept asking me if I wanted to be a dentist. It is best to keep this a secret during hygiene school BUT your best option is to be a dentist.

I am considering becoming a dental hygienist and am wondering what dental hygienist school should I consider if I want eventually to work independently and not for a dentist. I am from Toronto and have noted that there is a group of hygienists now working without any dentist and that particular setting has significant appeal for myself.
Is there are school I should consider in particular? Does it make any difference to the bottom line?

I am a Dental Consultant. I have been doing some work for a local hygiene school. Yes there is an over flow of hygienists but it isn’t the fault of the Colleges I believe that when the Dental Hygiene Association removed the regulation that you had to be a Dental Assistant for a year before you could even apply to become a Hygienist. So we now have high school grads that have no previous experience and have a lack of dental knowledge becoming hygienists. So we need to have that regulation return!! Also I have held many interviews where I had to hire a hygienist and you would be surprised as to how some people carry themselves. You have to stand out form the crowd! The doctor only wants to know how his practice benefits from hiring you!
Good Luck to you all!

I am planning a change in career to become a dental hygienist. My brother is a dentist so I am not worried about finding a job. What I am mostly concerned about however is how difficult is the dental hygienist school. I am a single mom and have two very active children that need lots of attention and time. So I am wondering about how was everyone’s experience when they were at the dental hygiene school studying to become a dental hygienist?
How many hours should I expect to need to study each day or week? How long are the hours at the dental hygiene school? Are there any particular requirements or skills needed for one to be a dental hygienist? Do you need to be someone really good with your hands at meticulous tasks?

I did hygiene school a few years ago as a single mom which was very difficult. It is doable, but you will have a much harder time than the other girls, and some of them don’t understand how much harder it is. Definitely forget about having any part time job on top of school and your kids, because I don’t know how anyone would have time for all 3. If you really really want to be a hygienist then go for it. I really love my career, and it was worth every minute and every nervous breakdown to make a better life for myself and my child. Also I qualified for several grants and bursaries for being a single mother, which is all free money you don’t need to pay back. You should look into what free aid you qualify for in your province to help supplement your tuition and living expenses. Good luck!

I spent about 25 hours a week in classes/clinics. Studying varies with what kind of a student you are. I would say you need to devote about 7-10 hours (absolute minimum) a week to readings, studying, projects, after hours in clinic, etc. This varies a lot though with the school you attend, amount of classes you have in each term, balance between clinical hours/lecture hours. You don’t really need special skills to be a hygienist. I’ve heard some schools require a manual dexterity test, but I’m not sure if that’s true. In all honesty, I believe almost anyone can learn the clinical skills with enough practice and patience, and some people are more naturals at it than others. You do have to be smart if you want to get into a decent school though. Private schools will enrol almost anyone. Community colleges and universities are much more competitive, usually receiving hundreds of applications for a few dozen spaces. At the end of the day you will still be a dental hygienist no matter what school you graduate from but keep in mind many dentists prefer graduates with university hygiene degrees, or graduates hailing from community colleges with superior reputations, such as George Brown, Algonquin, Fanshawe or Durham.
